The Martian by Andy Weir: A Review

Okay guys, I’ll admit it. I watched the movie before I read the book. But to be fair, The Martian by Andy Weir is a book that I NEVER thought I would enjoy. It’s ~obviously~ very science-y and there’s a lot of math (two things I hate). However, this is my new recommendation for every person that asks for a good book to read. IT’S SO GOOD.

First of all, the author is a little different from your usual author–he’s a literal genius. Andy Weir says he does relativistic physics for fun (lol). Weir was also hired as a computer programmer when he was 15 years old. I thought perhaps this would be a little over my head but the intelligence of the subject and main character is portrayed so simply and hilariously.

The main character, Mark, has the BEST sense of humor. He’s super sarcastic and never lets the reader down with his snappy comebacks. For those of you who don’t know what The Martian is all about, Mark is an astronaut who gets stuck on Mars after his crew mates thought he was dead. He has to find a way to survive until either another mission comes to Mars or until he can get a message to Earth. What is surely a devastating situation had me laughing the whole way.

The MartianNot only did the humor make this book what it is, but the realistic descriptions were incredible. I feel like I learned so much about space and NASA to the point where I spoke about the book as if it actually happened. *I’m aware this didn’t happen, that’s just how realistic is was.* I love closing a book and having such vivid images of what I just read. It was nice not having to struggle to imagine what was happening.

If you haven’t watched the movie, definitely read the book first and then watch! Matt Damon was the perfect actor to play Mark’s character. The screen adaptation of the plot was really great as well. They left out a few bigger scenes but it did not damage the story line, in my opinion.

Not very often do I enjoy sci-fi novels or love both the book and the movie. If you’re looking for a suspenseful and hilarious novel, look no further. Hopefully in the near future Andy Weir will have more in store for us in fiction!
